ALL VOLS

SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE
By: David Swann

Springtime means more than flowers and green grass on Rocky Top. It means its time for spring football practice. The Vols open practice this week after an intense eight week training program leading up to the time for helmets and shoulder pads. Coach Dooley called the winter workouts the best he has had as a head coach. He commended the team for gains in size, strength, speed and most importantly, team attitude. Then he quickly dismissed the work as meaningless if they didnt go about their spring practice work with the same attitude.

Dooley seems pleased to finally have some experience, depth and competition in the program. He made it clear in his opening press conference that players will be moved around and competition for playing time would be fierce. On the offensive line, enough competition exists to leave a starter sitting on the bench if they dont perform. The same type of competition can be found all over the field, particularly in the defensive back field, on the defensive line and at running back, where Rajion Neal will work exclusively after spending most of last year at wide receiver. Other position changes of note include Jacques Smith to jack linebacker, Curt Maggitt to middle linebacker, Prentiss Waggner moving from safety to corner and Brent Brewer from safety to strong side linebacker. Channing Fugate has also moved to linebacker after beginning his career as a fullback. The moves come as no surprise as the Vols adjust to the 3 4 defense. In fact, Dooley said to expect a lot more experimentation as they try to find the correct positions for players in the new defense. Keep your eye on Jordan Williams and Steven Fowlkes. One, or both, could get a look at jack linebacker before the spring ends.
